La ciudad de Tsuruoka, ubicada en la parte occidental de la prefectura de Yamagata, junto al mar de Japón, es la única Ciudad Creativa Gastronómica de la UNESCO en Japón desde el 2014 y cuenta con tres "Herencias de Japón" que son: el Viaje del Renacimiento de Dewa Sanzan, la Seda Samurái y la Carretera Marítima de Kitamaebune.

Sus montañas sagradas de 1400 años: El Monte Haguro, el Monte Gassan y el Monte Haguro, sus hermosos bosques, el Acuario de Kamo con su exhibición de medusas (la más grande del mundo) y su cultura culinaria única lo convirtieron en un destino valioso de Tohoku en todo el país.
